It is said that the soul of a destination lies in the expression of its arts and its cultural life.
So tap into the energy and rhythm of the soul of Kimberley and the Diamond Fields! Kimberley and the many towns surrounding it are regular venues for performances ranging from live township jazz to classic symphony concerts in the Northern Cape Theatre; from the annual Gariep Festival to the Northern Cape All-Africa Arts Festival; from a battle of the DJs bash to a pop-rock concert in the park, not to mention the array of Indian and other cultural performances regularly held in Kimberley. Therešs also the acclaimed Oppenheimer Garden Flea Market held every last Saturday of the month. So, you name it, wešve got it! The Diamond Fields boasts many top rated artists like Rochester Rocky Mafafo, Walter Westbrook, Ann Pretorius, Wilfred Delport, Flai Shipipa, Petrus Tsasibane and Judith Horner. Some of their art works are on display at the fantastic William Humphreys Art Gallery or on sale directly from the artists themselves. Many temporary exhibitions of art works from these and other well-known visiting artists take place in the region and are well worth a visit. Wildebeest Kuil Rock Art Centre and !Xun & Khwe San Art Just outside Kimberley on the Barkly West Road is the Wildebeest Kuil Rock Art Centre, and !Xun and Khwe Kamatoka shop which show-cases brilliant contemporary San paintings, prints, fabrics, ceramics and curio crafts. The adjacent rock engraving site is managed by the !Xun and Khwe for the Northern Cape Rock Art Trust. An audio tour, rock art movie, displays, and a walk back through time across this ancient sacred site, make it one of South Africa's premier rock art attractions. San culture has survived the colonial encounter in Southern Africa, but at a cost. Rock engraving and painting traditions are extinct. Yet, exploring new media in art and craftwork, and through other aspects of cultural life and language, the !Xun and Khwe show resilience and make a name for themselves. Artworks from here have been exhibited in major galleries nationally and overseas. |
