Come share in dusting off (pun intended)
the forgotten history of the origins of us human beings by going on the
Kimberley Archaeology Tour. Long pre-dating the glitter and glamour of
diamonds, Kimberley¹s past in fact stretches back thousands, nay
hundreds of thousands, of years. The evidence lies literally in the dust
below your feet. Stone Age tools are often found in the gardens of Kimberley
homes and on our sandy sidewalks. The latest research reveals more and more of the origins of humanity in Southern Africa. The Diamond Fields region is particularly blessed with a wealth of significant rock art and archaeological sites which can now be visited by going on the Kimberley Archaeology Route. The tour starts at the magnificent Ancestors Display in the McGregor Museum. This display offers an introductory sweep through the last 3 million years of Northern Cape history. Visitors then proceed to call at various unique stone age and rock engraving sites, including the Wildebeest Kuil Rock Art Centre and !Xun & Khwe art shop and Canteen Kopje. It can even be extended to include a visit to the 140m long Wonderwerk Cave near Kuruman with its rock paintings and more than 800 000 years of human history. Each of the sites visited is quite distinct and spectacular in terms of rock art and its place in early human history. Tours involve lots of walking in the veld. Visitors will hence have the added advantage of experiencing our fauna, flora and breathtaking landscapes while searching for rock engravings and other interesting artefacts. So do not forget to bring comfortable walking shoes, a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen lotion, camera and enough spools of film to make this a most memorable part of your travel plan! |
