Kimberley is known as the birthplace of diamond mining

The Frances Baard district has a climate favourable for outdoor living with a great number of “sunny” days throughout the year. This creates the right environment for the region to produce quality export fruit, vegetables and olives. Kimberley is a unique, value for money destination-, a perfect family destination with many educational things to see and do. Guided underground tours of an operational De Beers diamond mine; the old fashioned alluvial and diamond diggings; the Big Hole and Open Mine Museum village; follow the N12 Anglo- Boer War battlefield route from Kimberley and experience the most exciting Anglo-Boer War battlefields in South Africa, including the famous battlefields of Magersfontein and Paardeberg; the Kimberley Ghost Trail is a superb guided tour of the haunted corners of Kimberley; Township Wonders - the famous Township Number Two, one of the oldest such locations or townships in South Africa, re-named Galeshewe after Kgosi (Chief) Galeshewe. It gives visitors a glimpse of everyday-life in a township with traditional food and lovely African jazz music that enhances the ambience of a truly wonderful township experience.. The Kimberley Archaeology Tour uncovers a wealth of significant rock art and archaeological sites at the McGregor Museum. It displays the last 3 million years of Northern Cape history through various unique stone age and rock engraving sites, including the Wildebeest Kuil Rock Art Centre.

The Rock Art Centre just outside Kimberley on the Barkly West Road show-cases brilliant contemporary San paintings, prints, fabrics, ceramics and curio crafts. The Vaalharts irrigation scheme is the biggest in the southern hemisphere and is situated in the peninsula formed by the confluence of the Vaal and Harts rivers, which run parallel for about 140 kilometres above their junction. The Vaal River still has many attractive sites stretching downstream to Delportshoop, with signs of breakwaters still visible, and small villages with romantic names such as Gong Gong, Beaumont’s Folly, and Bosman’s Fortune. The lower Vaal and Riet Rivers at Kimberley are renowned as the unrivalled destination for stable yellow fish populations yielding world class catches of large mouth and small mouth yellow fish. Witsand Nature Reserve- few eco-destinations in the Northern Cape are as scenic as this reserve and even fewer boast the luxury self-catering accommodation it offers visitors. The main feature of this reserve is the sensual, flowing white “roaring” dunes - the sand actually makes a growling sound when disturbed - that stretch over a distance of 9 kilometres. The dunes are twenty to sixty metres high. Kamfersdam - Africa’s first breeding island for flamingos situated just outside of Kimberley on the N12 route to Johannesburg. The newly constructed s-shaped island will protect the pink birds from interferences such as both dogs and humans. Proclaimed as a Natural Heritage Site but worthy of international status, this pan is a “must” for bird enthusiasts. Some 186 species have been recorded here, including the lesser and greater flamingo. At least 3 000 flamingos can be seen daily as they forage in the gently rippling water.
