BUSINESS
The Frances Baard District Municipality is spending the majority of its resources on eradication of service backlogs of the past. Providing previously disadvantaged communities with access to free basic services through the provision of infrastructure has been one of the key thrusts of development. In Magareng Municipality the FBDM has assisted with the revamp of electricity reticulation, which in turn satisfied the needs of the business community. In our DMA, we have successfully rejuvenated a rural settlement by upgrading infrastructure and simultaneously creating some jobs.
The region offers immense tourism development potential because of the availability
of the rivers and other internationally recognised tourism sites. Kimberley
is known as the birthplace of diamond mining, with the “Big Hole” as a world-known
tourism site. Galeshewe township has been identified as one of the Presidential
urban nodes and offers potential for developers.
The main source of income is from levies, which all state and private enterprises are legally obliged to pay to FBDM. Levies are paid based on remuneration for all employees as well as turnover generated. The formula is determined at a national level by the Minister of Finance. The levy assessment is a self-declared asessment, but the municipality may request information and assistance from the South African Receiver of Revenue should we suspect that the assessment is not a truthfull account of the state of a registered enterprise. We also do inspections across the district ensure that businesses are prevented from operating illegally.
